Standard Tactics
The Standard Tactics for WW1 were the same all around. Battles would begin in and around strategic points. While the front lines skirmished the vanguard would dig in. With both sides entrenched a middle ground christened NO MANS LAND would open up. No mans land would become a barren muddy and filthy place filled with the dead and blood soaked sand, with miles of trench work on either side. The phrase "Over the Top Boys" became the battle cry of the war. The first change came with the invention of tanks but they were slow and cumbersome making them more like land mines for the troops in and around them. It would take quite a few years but tanks would eventually eliminate trench ware fare.
The common assault on a trench system consided of a heavy but useless shelling, sometimes chemical agents were used as well in these shellings. Then under heavy enemy fire a large wave of men would charge across the field if a good number of them made it to the trenches they would proceed to leap into the trenches and begin to hack a slash at anything that moved. After scores of these kind of attacks a winner would finally emerge with heavy heavy casualties attached.
