The following page is a timeline of the leadup to WWI.
On June 28th, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assasinated by Galviro Princip of Serbia. A month later, on July 23rd, Austria-Hungary sent some demands to Serbia if they wanted to avoid war. They had only two days to agree. While Serbia agreed with most of the demands, the questioned some as they would have made their nation lose independence. Because of this, within 48 hours of the demands, Austria-Hungary broke of democratic ties with Serbia. On July 25th, Russia mobilized its army and readied itself for war, as did Serbia. Meanwhile, Great Britain had asked Germany to stop this war, but Germany declined. Germany was having its own problems with France, and on July 31st, mobilized its army, while demanding that Russia stop getting ready for war within twelve hours. Russia refused, and Germany declared war on Russia on August 1st. France mobilized their army on this day too. Two days later, Gerrmany declared war on France as well, after making an alliance with the Ottoman Empire the day before. On August 4th, Britain declared war on Germany after Germany's storm through Belgium. On August 6th, Austria-Hungary declared war on Russia, and later that month, on August 23rd, Japan declared war on Germany.
